Social Media Digest: May 22 through May 31
This week, we look at Twitter’s plans for the future, a record setting Nike viral and the effect it had on their Facebook Page, a Zynga/7-Eleven partnership, a (RED) movie that’s exploring new methods of distribution, Pennsylvania’s Foursquare promotion, and the new digital Macy’s catalogue that’s now available on the iPad.
The Twitter Platform – In response to Twitter developers demanding to have more insight into the future plans of the company, Twitter wrote a post on their blog about the future of the Twitter Platform to explain what they’re building, how they will sustain the company and the ecosystem, and where they believe there will be opportunities for Twitter’s partners.
Nike Breaks Own Viral Record – Nike’s new Write The Future ad has taken top spot as the ad with the most views within the first week of release with 7.8 million views, beating out the previous Nike ad, “Earl and Tiger”, which received 6.3 million views in its first week online.
Nike Doubles Facebook Fans with Write The Future – In addition to setting viral records, Nike also showed that a hit spot can help drive interest in social channels as well, with their Facebook page gaining more than 500,000 “Likes” in a single day during the debut of the spot. Though a large ad buy helped drive an audience to the page to watch the premier, it’s safe to assume that at least a few of those new likes were driven there by word of mouth.
Buy. Earn. Play. – Zynga has teamed up with 7-Eleven to create a series of products that will include codes that can be redeemed for exclusive gifts in their online games, bringing the digital and the real world yet another step closer together.
The Lazarus Effect – (RED) worked with Spike Jonze to produce a 30-minute film called The Lazarus Effect to promote the work that the organization is doing to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, and is using social media in addition to traditional channels to help get the movie out there. Though the first airing will take place on HBO, the film will then be instantly available on YouTube where it can be watched globally for free, and then shortly thereafter on a custom iPad app that will include the full film, along with additional information and ways to get involved.
Visit PA on Foursquare – Who says that companies are the only ones that can get in on the Foursquare action? To help drive interest in the Keystone State, Pennsylvania has partnered with Foursquare to create three badges that can be earned at one of the 100 locations that now include tips for what to do when you’re visiting.
Macy’s iPad Catalogue – Macy’s has been digitizing their catalogues for some time now, but to help get it into the hands of consumers, they partnered with Zinio to bundle their Summer catalogue with digital issues of 20 popular magazines like Elle Décor and Marie Claire, and made it smaller and non-Flash compatible to work on the iPad.
